In 1999, a population of threatened greenback cutthroat trout was discovered and the Severy Creek trail was closed to protect the trout.
With some discussion of re-opening the trail if the trout could be protected, in 2003, Forest Service asked Friends of the Peak to install four bridges of natural materials to keep trail users out of the water to prevent the spread of disease organisms, especially whirling disease.
In 2015, Rocky Mountain Field Institute invited Friends of the Peak to join them on a Severy Creek restoration project. Volunteers gathered local seed and distributed the seed on sediment deposits.
